Examples of questions we hear regularly regarding stainless steel screws are:
Do stainless steel screws rust?
Stainless steel screws are more rust-resistant because they contain nickel and chromium, which combine to form a passivation layer. However, harsh environments and demanding applications can lead to corrosion or tarnish.
410 stainless steel will get surface rust over time, but that will not compromise the screw. Many of our 410 stainless screws have a ceramic coating to protect against surface rust. 18-8 and 300-series stainless steel are more rust-resistant, but we do not recommend driving them into thicker metals because they are much softer than 410 stainless steel.
How are stainless steel screws made?
Manufacturers use iron and carbon alloy steel combined with a precise amount of chromium to make stainless steel. Chromium is critical to the process because it provides the passive oxide layer that prevents rust. Other metals used to make stainless steel include nickel, silicon, manganese and molybdenum.
How do you tell if a screw is stainless steel?
410 stainless steel screws contain markings on the head that indicate the type of material. Manufacturers or distributors often supply charts explaining more specific markings. In addition, stainless steel has a distinct tone of silver or gray with a brushed texture.
Are stainless steel screws strong?
Although stainless steel screws boast excellent durability and strength, each screw differs based on the exact grade of material. At All Points Fasteners, our experts can help you choose the most practical and cost-effective stainless steel screw for your application.
Can you use stainless steel screws on aluminum?
In many cases, stainless steel screws are an excellent fastening choice for aluminum, specifically in dry conditions. Since there is a risk of galvanic corrosion between the metals in moist environments, creating a barrier using paint or a plastic washer can prevent any reaction. At All Points Fasteners, we apply a silver ceramic coating on many of our 410 stainless screws to prevent galvanic corrosion.
